What was billed as the "Eve of Destruction", at Western Speedway, lived up to the billing in more ways than one. Demo Cars, Demo Trucks, Mini Vans, and Figure 8s ran a full program of Trophy Dashes, Heat races, and Main events. As well as racing, with these cars, Colin Heacock, known as the Crazy Canuck and Gary "the Animal" Williams were on the program jumping a car and a bus respectively. A boat race was also on this program of destruction. After a beautiful week of weather, Mother Nature decided to add her form of mayhem and added a little rain, actually quite a bit of rain, a little bit of lightening, and a gorgeous sunset for all to see. Despite the rain the 4,000 plus fans stayed and cheered on the racers and the jumpers at every opportunity, their determination undampened.

Trophy Dash wins went to Kirk Peacey, Demo Cars; George Haywood won the Demo Truck Dash, Spencer Nicholls won the Mini Van Dash, while Shawn Hitchings picked up the win in Figure 8s.

Mark Lockart returned to Western Speedway and was on the pole for the Demo Truck main and made the return a successful one. Mark has been away for several years, but still found his way around the Langford oval. He held off a hard charging Keith Hanson and took the checkered flag first leading start to finish. In his words: "Its like coming home to return here.

Graig Holfeld had the pole for the Demo Car feature event and led for the first seven laps. Kirk Peacey followed him until lap eight and used his opportunities to get by and drove to the win. He was followed by Robin Trotter and Smokin Joe Liberatore.

Shawn Connaroe survived a very hard hitting Feature event and took the honors in the Figure 8s class. Cam Wilkinson was the only other survivor as all the other cars crashed out. David Dewitt had new colors on his Mini Van and brought the van to victory in the Mini Van series. The whole night for this series was an adventure especially after the rain but Dewitt held off a strong push from Spencer Nicholls and Kail Beck for the win.

Bryce Muir banged and crashed into everything that moved in the Total Destruction event. This event featured hard hits and more hard hits but Muir was able to move quite well, considering his car was banged up pretty good, and grabbed the checkered flag.

A great field of trucks and cars entered the Boat Race each one trying to break the other drivers boat while saving his own. The winner is determined by how much boat he has left after so many laps. Needless to say on the wet track boats were trying to pass cars while the drivers were trying to crash boats. Boats and pieces and were flying all over the track while cars and trucks were doing the same but in the end, Mark Lockart returned to victory square in this very popular event.

The ramp was set up for the Crazy Canuck as he was to be one of the Features of the night. After conferring with his crew and track officials he decided the jump could go ahead. Starting way back up the run out for the drags, Colin headed for the ramp at the required speed. One side of the ramp gave away sending the car into a spin causing the car to land roof down instead of nose first and coming to rest on the roof of the catch cars lining the front stretch. After some anxious moments the driver exited the crashed car much to the delight of the fans. He did suffer a cut over the eye but otherwise seemed OK.

The new ramp was set up to carry the heavier bus driven by Gary Williams. Last season he made it look easy on the second attempt and landed a great jump. Williams started well back this year and got the big bus rolling and even though the hight and distance did not reach last year's run, Gary also pulled off a great jump crashing a fif th wheel as he left the end of the ramp. Gary also used this occassion to showcase the limo that he will attempt to jump to a world record on August 22nd.

Next weekend, Western Speedway hosts the return of the L.P. Gear Mini Stocks, OTRA, Car Series, and the very competitive V.I. Rental Stock Car Series.
