NASCAR Media, June 6, 2009
Delaware, Ontario On the third attempt at a green-white-checkered finish, DJ Kennington won the Delaware 200 presented by Belfor Restoration Services in
a heated NASCAR Canadian Tire Series race Saturday night at Delaware Speedway in front of a near capacity crowd.
While the weather cooled, the temperature on the track rose. Kennington (No. 17 Castrol/Mahindra Tractor Dodge), from nearby
St. Thomas, Ont., battled with Don Thomson Jr. (No. 4 Home Hardware Chevrolet) on the first two attempts to end the race under green. In the end,
though, Kennington was able to beat Ron Beauchamp Jr. (No. 60 Mopar/Mobil 1 Dodge) to the finish line by .516 seconds.
"I really hated how that ended with (Thomson). He tried to close the door on me and I wasn't going to let him," said Kennington. "We'll take them any
way we can get them."
It was Kenningtonšs first win in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series since Sept. 8, 2007 at Barrie (Ont.) Speedway.
Defending series champion Scott Steckly (No. 22 Canadian Tire/Tow Truck in a Box Dodge) finished third followed by Kerry Micks (No. 02 Beyond Digital
Imaging Ford) and Anthony Simone (No. 95 Crown Modular/United Lumber Chevrolet in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Joey McColm, Dave Whitlock, Andrew Ranger, Nik Lapcevich and Thomson rounded out the top 10.
Unofficially in the championship point standings, Beauchamp holds a nine-point edge on Whitlock. Micks and Steckly are tied for third, just a single
point behind Whitlock.
The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series is right back on the track next weekend for the Dickies 200 at Mosport International Raceway, the 10-turn road course
near Bowmanville, Ont. Practice and qualifying will be held on Saturday, June 13 with the race slated for Sunday afternoon.
