LOGANO CAPTURES SECOND NASCAR TOYOTA ALL-STAR SHOWDOWN VICTORY
"Also Won At Irwindale In 2007"
For Immediate Release - NASCAR Public Relations
| | |
IRWINDALE, Calif. (Jan. 30, 2010) Joey Logano got his second NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown trophy and Sergio Pena nearly made a historic debut on the
national stage. |
Logano, 19, held off the 16-year-old Pena and two-time race winner Matt Kobyluck for the victory in the 225-lap race Saturday before a sold-out crowd at the
Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.
It was Pena's first career race in NASCAR's top developmental series and it came in the non-points, postseason event, which has earned the moniker the "Daytona
500 of short-track racing."
Logano made his mark by winning as a 17-year-old rookie in the 2007 edition; Pena, who only has one year of Late Model racing on his resume, nearly out-did that.
Logano and Pena waged a race-long battle for the lead from drop of the green. For most of the race it was the Pena in heated pursuit of the 2009 NASCAR Sprint
Cup Series Rookie of the Year. Pena was able to grab the lead on several occasions. Logano, however, got the best of two late-race restarts to pull away for
the victory.
Kobyluck got by Pena briefly on Lap 218, and by the time Pena got back to second four laps later he didn't have enough time to track Logano back down.
It's been a whirlwind weekend for the Winchester, Va., native.
Pena, driving for Revolution Racing and Drive For Diversity, beat out three teammates Thursday in a race-off for a chance to qualify for the Showdown. He easily
did that, earning the pole in Friday's qualifying.
The win was a vindication of sorts for Logano, who crossed the line first in last yearıs NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, but was penalized to last place for
aggressive driving on the last lap. Logano led three times for a race-high 171 laps while Pena led three times for 54 laps.
Following Logano, Pena and Kobyluck across the line was Matt DiBenedetto and Andrew Myers. Eric Holmes, David Mayhew, Eddie MacDonald, Paulie Harraka and Steve
Park rounded out the top 10.
Reigning NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Champion Jason Bowles finished 11th while K&N Pro Series East 2009 titlist Ryan Truex was relegated to 26th after a
late-race accident.

PENA MAKES A SPLASH AT NASCAR TOYOTA ALL-STAR SHOWDOWN
"Earns Pole In First NASCAR K&N Pro Series Appearance"
NASCAR Public Relations
| | |
IRWINDALE, Calif. (Jan. 29, 2010) Sergio Pena highlighted an action-packed day in Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on Friday as he captured the pole
for Saturday's NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown. |
In his first competition in a NASCAR K&N Pro Series race car, the 16-year-old Pena captured the 21 Means 21 Pole Award presented by Coors
Light for the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown with a fast lap of 18.390 seconds (97.879 mph) during qualifying Friday evening.
Pena, a member of the Drive for Diversity initiative, earned his way into the event by competing in a qualifying race among his three teammates at
Revolution Racing in similarly prepared cars from one of Toyota Speedway's entry divisions on Thursday evening. A run-away win in that run-off allowed
Pena a shot at competing on Friday.
Pena's pole run bested that of 2007 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown winner and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Joey Logano. Logano qualified second at
18.421 (97.715).
The second row for Saturday night's 225-lap NASCAR K&N Pro Series race will consist of Greg Pursley (18.475 seconds/97.429 mph) and Eric Holmes
(18.498/97.308). Sean Caisse was the fifth-fastest qualifier (18.520/97.192).
Jeff Barkshire filled out the third row and the fourth row will consist of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver David Gilliland and Josh Combs.
The two fastest in afternoon practice, Jason Bowles qualified 10th and Ryan Truex ninth. Defending winner of the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown
Matt Kobyluck qualified 14th.
Friday night's action at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale concluded with the NASCAR K&N Pro Series last-chance "Open" race to determine the final six starting
positions for Saturdayıs feature. Michael Self came away victorious while Justin Philpott earned the final slot.
In the Super Late Model portion of the 2010 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown earlier in the evening, multi-time track champion at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale
Rip Michels once again returned to Victory Lane. Michels was challenged mid-race by Alex Haase and Travis Thirkettle, but the two were involved in the same
accident on Lap 60. Michels eventually had to hold off Gilliland during a green-white-checker finish to earn the victory.
It was the first NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown victory for Michels, a three-time track champion at Irwindale. Michels has twice been runner-up in NASCAR
Toyota All-Star Showdown races: 2004 in the Elite Division and 2007 in the Super Late Model Division.

A DIFFERENT RANGER HEADS TO NASCAR TOYOTA ALL-STAR SHOWDOWN
Shon Sbarra, NASCAR Public Relations
For Immediate Release
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (January 25, 2010) Andrew Ranger, the 2009 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 champion, will utilize his secured starting
position earned as a NASCAR Developmental Series champion in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown on Jan. 29-30 at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.).
The annual all-star event attracts the top drivers from across North America to what has become the pinnacle of short-track racing in the U.S. and is often
referred to as the 'Daytona 500 of short-track racing.'
The 23-year-old Ranger, out of Roxton Pond, Que., will pilot a car out of the Steve McGowen stable. McGowen fields the Chevrolet driven by David Mayhew, who
won a pair of NASCAR K&N Pro Series West events in 2009. Mayhew, too, has a secure spot in the starting lineup as a NASCAR K&N Pro Series race winner.
"I'm really excited about this opportunity to race against all these talented drivers," said Ranger.
In 2009, Ranger won his second Canadian Tire Series championship in three years on the power of a single-season series record six wins and outdistanced
frequent NASCAR Nationwide Series competitor DJ Kennington by 167 points for the crown. Among those six victories, three came on oval tracks while the others
were a result of his tremendous prowess on road courses.
It was through his road-course ability that he caught the attention of the U.S. stock-car media last August in the NASCAR Nationwide Series event in Montreal.
Ranger staged a race-long battle with Carl Edwards and Marcos Ambrose before settling for a third-place finish in the race.
His first stock-car victory on an oval track came last July 18 at SunValley Speedway in Vernon, B.C., where he dominated on the half-mile tri-oval by lapping
every car in the field but one. This win validated his skills behind the wheel of a NASCAR race car after making the switch from open-wheel racing where he
was a top-10 performer in the Champ Car World Series, which since has reunified with the Indy Car.
"That victory was huge for me," said Ranger. "If I was going to be racing in NASCAR, then I had to be able to win on ovals. Everything clicked that night.
All of the things that Dave Jacombs (car owner) and Billy Burns (crew chief) had taught me fell into place."
This will be Ranger's second appearance in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown having competed in the event following his first Canadian Tire Series
championship in 2007. That outing lasted just 31 laps, leaving him with a 39th-place finish.
However, this time around, a much more confident and experienced Ranger will be on display. At the time of his first NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown outing,
he had a grand total of 13 stock-car races under his belt with just a single victory on a road course. Now, he has three full Canadian Tire Series seasons
with two titles and nine wins, six NASCAR Nationwide starts and a handful of other stock-car events to his credit.
"I think this time I will be a lot more comfortable with everything," he said. "Last time, I had never seen the track before and the car was totally new
to me. It's still not going to be easy, but it all won't be so new."
Virtually all of the drivers in the race will have the home-field advantage on Ranger as the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 competes in
different equipment than the NASCAR K&N Pro Series cars used in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown.
"Most of the other drivers are more familiar with the cars, but I've had a few starts in the (NASCAR Nationwide Series) cars which are pretty close. So, we'll
see what happens. I'm definitely looking forward to it."
In addition to eligible 2009 race winners and series champions, the starting lineup for the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown will be determined through time
trials, limited provisionals for NASCAR K&N Pro Series regulars, and the last-chance "Open" race that provides drivers one final chance to make the grid.
The 2010 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown schedule also includes 100-lap Whelen All-American Series Super Late Model and 75-lap Late Model races. Both nights
of racing will be televised live on SPEED and also will be broadcast live on SIRIUS NASCAR Radio.

The 12-race schedule, with stops at 10 venues in seven states, also features a first-time visit by the series to the high-banked oval of

on April 8, for a companion event also with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the NASCAR Nationwide Series.
"The NASCAR Camping World Series West continues to visit key markets and top race tracks throughout the western United States," said George
